The US Justice Department has officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to block the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to federal court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates civil rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant response by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to flip just a small number of Republican-held House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, investigations and possible further challenges.
